A Rich Historic Legacy

Newtown, Connecticut Newtown, known for its artist community and rich history, was settled in 1708 on land pur- chased from the Pootatuck Indians.

Some of the well-known spots in N ewtown are Lake Zoar, Edmond Town Hall, the Hawley School, and Cyrenius H. Booth Library, many of which were due to the generosity of Mary Elizabeth Hawley. Miss Hawley was one of Newtown's more well known and wealthy resi- dents. She is also responsible for the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and the restoration of the Village Cemetery.

Other famous residents also contributed to the growth of Newtown. C.B. Taylor gave the Taylor Field Playground behind Hawley School, and Bertram Stroock contributed to Dickenson Memorial Park.

The Senior Center/Senior Services which operates in Newtown provide trips, parties, educational and intergenera- tional programs to the commu- nity as well as other senior-relat- ed services.

The Newtown Park and Recreation Department also offers programs to the residents which include a youth basket- ball league, an annual Halloween party, and a Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot.

Lake Lillinonah, is a popular site to go boating, water-skiing, and canoeing.

Residents and visitors can also swim, play tennis and picnic at Dickinson Park and Treadwell Park.
